Update: Vying GamesI have a new gaming site called Vying Games which includes a new (better) Othello (aka Reversi). Moxie-Cat.com's Reversi isn't going anywhere, but I think if you try the new version, you might like it better. This reversi applet goes light on bells and whistles, using only simple graphics and no sound effects, but it offers a fairly tough level of play. The computer's game is strong enough to challenge novice reversi players. Object The object of the game Reversi (or Othello) is to capture more of the game board than your opponent. Playing the game The player is red, the computer blue. The player moves first and then alternates turns with the computer until either the computer or the player must pass or the game is done (the board filled with pieces or no more moves are possible). How to move: When it is your turn you select an unoccupied square on the board with one of your pieces horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in line with that unoccupied square and opponent pieces occupying every square inbetween. When you click on an unoccupied square that meets those criteria one of your pieces will occupy that square and all the opponent pieces that were inbetween the empty square and your piece will become your pieces. To make it easier to find moves the program puts an "+" in squares that are legal moves. Passing: The player may pass the first turn to the computer by clicking on one of the four occupied squares at the beginning of the game. In addition, if no moves are available to the player, the player must click anywhere on the game board to pass to the computer. If no moves are available for the computer, the computer will pass to the player automatically. Game over: When there are no more open squares on the board or no more moves for either the player or the computer then the game is over and the winner and the score will appear on the screen along with the margin of victory. To start a new game click on the screen. |
